Working in the
business world is a difficult task. Stock prices falling, petrol price hikes,
decrease in investments, increase in custom duty of goods etc can sometimes
make or break a business.
In the business world,
nothing remains constant. Times change, people change. You need to be
innovative and adaptive to survive in the dynamic environment.

It’s tough to say when
Mr. S.K. Tulli became one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Chandni Chowk.
He is the owner of Timsy, his own registered brand. It has been 40 years since
he put his first step into this business world. He set his foot out of his
house at the age of fourteen in the search for money for himself and his family.
It took him just a week to decide that he wanted to become an entrepreneur. He
began working in his early teens, spent three months working his way out in
Janakpuri, as a daily wage worker at a electronics retailer's shop, while taking
lessons from his boss on how things work in the business world, and as a young man
dealing with the sudden onset of adulthood and his family depending on him,
made his life difficult and him even more vulnerable.
He had a lot going on with his life. He had no one to guide him. His father passed away just a few months after his birth.
He was not ready to answer a lot of personal questions. Although, he was proud to say that he has his own family now. His son working with him as a partner. On asking about the type of clientèle he said and I quote, "Sabhi tarah ke log aate aate hai, ache bhi or kangle bhi. " The customers there are mainly retailers.
Many of the products in Chandni Chowk are imported from China.Global source supply most of the products in Chandni Chowk. Although Timsy products are manufactured in the local factories, some parts in it for eg. the heating insulation material are imported from some parts of China.
The goods are generally packed inside dry grass to keep them safe. Dry grass is considered to be light weight and is cheaply available. Although in countries outside India, electronics are preferably packed inside thermacoal.
Timsy being a very limited to Chandni Chowk causes difficulty for people to know about it. Mr. Tulli doesn't spend much on publicity. For eg. many companies like Philips, Panasonic are famous due to their global activities and their media strategies. They hire big brand ambassadors to entice people into buying their products.
Many a times local brands produce more durable products than the big multinational brands, but because of the lack of courage in the owner, cause them to remain a very limited local brand.
The custom duty charged on the goods increase the cost of the products. This causes an increase in the sales tax charged from the customers, making the product even more expensive for a local wholesaler.
I had a long talk with him and I have a lot that I need to share, regarding the production process and cash flow.
Until next time..
Until next time..
